Ubisoft Reveals Rainbow Six Siege X Free Access And Dual Front Gamemode

The wait’s over. A while back, Ubisoft teased the reveal of Siege X – an upcoming overhaul to the Rainbow Six Siege experience. Today, we got a trailer drop, and so much more beyond.

The trailer shows us several new features coming to the game, alongside the footage needed to confirm it all. There’s a way to play the game for free, a new 6v6 game mode, improved lighting and textures, and you can even rappel around corners!

The free to play access offers new players a more limited version of the game – you won’t be able to play Ranked, for instance. But Unranked, Quickplay, and the new ‘Dual Front’ mode will all be freely available.

As for Dual Front itself, the mode is a 6v6 experience on a new map: “District”. The mode breaks a norm that Rainbow Six Siege has set for a decade now: you can mix attackers and defenders. It’s also got “dynamic objectives” that’ll put you in a variety of engagements across the map – further blurring the lines between attack and defense.

The Operation Prep Phase Test Server launches on March 4 for PlayStation 4 (PS4), PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

In Dual Front, operator gadgets will be on a cooldown rather than being outright limited, and you’ll respawn if you die – the mode even lets you swap operators when respawning. But this isn’t a kill-em-all engagement: you’ll need to help your team achieve several of the dynamic objectives in order to claim victory.

PC Gamer describes the mode as “turbo Siege”, remarking on the chaos of it all, while still being relatively forgiving. “There’s a little bit of MOBA in there too,” they say.

Ubisoft Offers a Clearer View Of Rainbow Six Siege X For You Visual Learners Out There

Rainbow Six Siege X graphics comparison

In a series of YouTube videos, Ubisoft reveals several aspects of Siege X in greater detail. There’s four videos in all: one each for the new rappel system, the audio overhaul, environmental destruction, and graphical enhancements.

For rappelling, you can sprint on walls now, and move along wall corners. The video’s also got a behind-the-scenes look at some mocap actors doing their thing.

As for the environment, there’s a few new ways to break stuff. Fire extinguishers can be shot to create clouds of smoke, and conspicuously-placed pipes of flammable gas does… exactly what you’d expect.

In the audio department, everything’s been designed to help you “better detect enemy actions.” Sound effects should have a greater directional accuracy to them, letting you better pinpoint the location of your enemies – even vertically.

The graphical bonuses are better seen than described – luckily, the video format makes that exceptionally easy. This is a bread-and-butter graphical upgrade: textures and lighting are the big ones.

You can find all this info, and more, collected on a megathread in the Rainbow Six Siege subreddit, where fans discuss the changes and their impact on the game at large.
