Space Marine 2 Will Never Go ‘Full Live Service’ Despite Player Claims Of ‘FOMO’

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 fans are safe from the live service game trend, it seems.

In a community update, Focus Entertainment recapped the game’s updates throughout February, including the Datavault update and emotes, and teased what’s coming next. One thing they announced was a new community event where players would be able to get an emblem-less variant of the helmet for the Mk VIII Errant power armor.

However, these community events have been a point of criticism for the community, as they claim that they create a sense of ‘FOMO’ – or fear of missing out – that’s commonly used in live service games to manipulate players into playing so they don’t miss limited-time items. However, Focus Entertainment included a statement in the new update stating that these players have nothing to worry about.

In response to player complaints about community events, Focus Entertainment stated that all the items available through them will be available later, and the events are intended as a way for dedicated players to get them earlier and more easily than others.

They admit that the experience hasn’t been entirely up to snuff so far, but they want to improve the process.

They also state that they have no intention of turning Space Marine 2 into a “full live service” game.

Rest assured, we are not looking to transform Space Marine 2 into a full live service game. The items available through events WILL be available later, for everyone. We want Community Events to be a way to unlock the items in advance, for the most dedicated players, and not to be a source of frustration and stress for everyone.

Warhammer brand parent company Games Workshop is looking for the next Space Marine 2 video game hit.

They go on to apologize for the trouble players have had with the unlocking process in community events, stating that they are working on simplifying it and making it “less constraining.”

Live service games are big business. According to analysts, over 40% of all US PlayStation and Xbox playtime was spent on just 10 live service games.

But the backlash against Space Marine 2’s community events shows how even the slightest whiff of common live service tactics will draw the ire of a game’s playerbase.

In addition to the new community event, the update also announces that Steam players will gain access to a public test server in March and that a horde mode will be added, which will be “very different” from the horde mode in the first game.
