Starfield Players Want Ship Stealing To Be Rebalanced

Highlights

  • Stealing ships in Starfield adds a villainous element, but it’s not the best way to earn credits.
  • Players feel that Bethesda hasn’t made ship-stealing rewarding enough in terms of credits.
  • While stealing ships may not be the most profitable strategy, there are ways to make it more rewarding.

Starfield, the game that everybody loves to hate. This time, the community is debating on whether or not stealing ships is pointless, with some calling it unbalanced, unrewarding, and boring.

While stealing ships isn’t the main focus of Starfield, it is an important element for those wanting to roleplay as a villainous pirate…this is an RPG, after all. But has Bethesda been accommodating enough to really let you play the way you want to play? While there are numerous ways to play, Starfield doesn’t appear to be very supportive of those looking to go down the chaotic evil route, which fans think is proven by its lackluster ship-stealing elements.

Starfield Wants You To Have More Travel Options, But What Does That Mean?

There are better options out there.

Before we get into the community’s complaints, it’s important to know how ship-stealing works – for all you goody-two-shoes out there who have never illegally boarded another ship and claimed it as your own!

The process of stealing a ship is relatively straightforward. Players must first locate a ship they want to steal. If it’s in space, you’ll need to disable the ship’s engines, but if it’s parked on the ground, you’ll just need to go on board and clear the ship of any NPCs. The same goes for a ship in space. After you’ve disabled the engines, dock, take out the NPCs, and head for the cockpit. Don’t worry about your previous ship, it will still be available from any port in the galaxy.

If you’re looking to sell your stolen ship, you’ll need to register it as your own at a spaceport technician, which is one of the reasons why this isn’t the best way to earn credits, as registering the ship will cost you. Although, some players have previously found a sneaky workaround to this.

Is Stealing Ships A Waste Of Time? Starfield Fans Think So

Over on the Starfield subreddit, a post with almost 1,000 upvotes at the time of writing has sparked a debate among the community. The post in question bashes Bethesda over the fact that ship-stealing doesn’t reward players with enough credits. “How could they possibly think this is what the players wanted? No, really, how bad can you be at designing video games, to end up making this choice consciously? Bethesda… YOU SUCK!!!” the user said. Which is probably a little harsh, if you ask me.

The user goes on to say that it is neither fun nor rewarding, which, apparently, resonated with fellow players.

“I hear you. It seems like the point of stealing ships is more for the xp and loot, and keep it to use, rather than flipping them for credits. The game in general isn’t very supportive of chaotic or evil RP,” Reddit user star_pegasus said.

While you do need credits to upgrade your ship, buy more ammo, and a few other things, having a boatload of credits in Starfield, ultimately, isn’t that important. While games like Grand Theft Auto V revolve around having as much money as possible, there’s more to Starfield than being concerned about how many credits you have.

Some users even pointed out that stealing ships can be fairly profitable if you actually loot the ship’s interior before selling it. Others believe there’s a middle ground that could be achieved by Bethesda, such as increasing the difficulty of stealing a ship, but making it more rewarding.

Yes, stealing ships isn’t the best way to make credits in Starfield, and it does take away some of the fun of causing space chaos. Could it be more balanced? Sure, but there’s a long list of other things I’d like to see added/fixed before Bethesda even thinks about messing with the game’s economy system.
