Insomniac’s Wolverine Better Have Suits Galore Like Spider-Man

After the powerful and emotional denouement that was James Mangold’s 2017 Logan feature, Marvel fans never expected to see the return of Hugh Jackman as the Adamantium-clawed mutant, Wolverine. However, to bring the retired 20th Century Fox X-Men franchise into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there needed to be a timeline collision event like no other, and who better to see this transpire than best friends Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool and the return of Jackman as Wolverine in this summer’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

The fandom is currently obsessing over the spectacle that is Logan’s blue and yellow suit come to life in live-action, and this got me thinking about the mutant’s suit collection within Insomniac Games’ upcoming Wolverine title.

Marvel’s Spider-Man had a total of 28 standard suits to unlock on launch day, and that number gradually increased within the DLCs and updates. Borrowing designs from the comics (Scarlet Spider, 2099, and Vintage Comic Book suits), the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Stark and Homemade suits), the Tobey Maguire (Webbed Suit) and Andrew Garfield (Amazing Suit) movies, alongside a few original styles (Cyborg and Spider-UK suits), Insomniac’s first Spidey game had a stacked wardrobe and Wolverine’s closet has the potential to be equally full thanks to the character’s source material and adaptations.

It’s Not All About The Blue And Yellow

Taking our suit exploration back to basics, Wolverine has donned a handful of suits in comic books, tackled by artists Leinil Francis Yu, Jim Lee, and John Romita Jr., to name a few. Therefore, Insomniac has a solid foundation for Logan’s locker. The classic blue and yellow suit is an obvious choice as the primary costume, but several variations can be included. Wolverine’s original suit looks more like a sleeveless wrestler’s attire, which is one option, then there are variants with longer sleeves covering the shoulders and winged eyes on the helmet. However, the Astonishing X-Men series scrapped flared eye guards in favor of a sleeker design.

Additional comic book suits include an OG colorway, secondary to the blue and yellow, in the brown and tan combo, the knight-styled Anti-Sabertooth suit, the noir X-Force and gold-striped Ultimate Universe suits, and finally, threads from Mark Millar’s alternate universe Old Man Logan – perhaps this option could come with an ageing filter too.

Of course, the suit from Deadpool & Wolverine will likely be added to the closet as well, which is more of a hard-shelled tactical suit adjourned, once again, with the fan-favorite blue and yellow colorway.

Next, we have Hugh Jackman’s movie suits to dip into, spanning the entire 20th Century Fox run. The iconic get-up featuring Logan’s white vest and his non-negotiable cigar prop, the leather jacket outfit from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and the black, leather suit from X-Men: The Last Stand – which had brown details added in X-Men: Days of Future Past – could all become part of the roster. Logan’s Origins feature also produced the lumberjack outfit during the prologue, which may have inspired Insomniac’s first-look reveal of the flannel character sitting at the bar. Of course, the suit from Deadpool & Wolverine will likely be added to the closet as well, which is more of a hard-shelled tactical suit adjourned, once again, with the fan-favorite blue and yellow colorway.

Ahead of the anticipated Marvel movie event of the year, Deadpool & Wolverine, here are the best Marvel games featuring Wolverine.

White Eyes Are A Must For Masks

Something else I hope to see gracing several of Insomniac’s Wolverine suits is white-eyed masks. Briefly crossing into DC’s camp, Batman is another character who frequently boasts menacing white eyes under his cowl, similar to Wolverine’s design in comic books. Previously thought to be a stylistic choice, and later explained to be white lenses in DC Universe Online and Batman: Arkham Knight, Batman #134 – part of The Bat-Man of Gotham five-part run – by Chip Zdarsky offered a disturbing alternative implying Bruce Wayne rolls his eyes back to reveal the whites of his peepers to terrify his enemies. Considering Wolverine is often filled with a similar rage, it’s entirely possible Logan does the same thing in a frenzied state. Regardless, these white-eyed additions give an aesthetic edge to any suit and Insomniac would get extra brownie points from me if they included this option in the blue and yellow suit at least.

Furthermore, there are original suit designs to discuss, following Insomniac’s free rein with Spider-Man. Comic book and concept artists frequently reimagine superhero costumes, either inspired by previous hallmarks or cooking up their original ideas, including Phil Cho’s Wolverine Bengal Tiger Suit shared by the artist on DeviantArt. Different color combos could also be explored, which was another feature included within the web-slinger’s game, in addition to more tactical-based designs for the brown and tan suit, or a time heist outfit inspired by Avengers: Endgame – considering Jackman’s Deadpool & Wolverine appearance is expected to cross into a portal alongside the Merc with a Mouth. The possibilities are endless, and Insomniac’s Wolverine is only one of many exciting upcoming projects heating up the Marvel GamerVerse.
