Whether you’re playing Larian’s acclaimed RPG on PC or console, this guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to equip and use torches in Baldur’s Gate 3. Consider reading this guide in its entirety to also learn about a useful weapon interaction with torches besides just illuminating an area.

Adding Torches To Your Inventory

The first step involves finding a torch and adding it to your inventory. This can be done by either looting it from a crate, chest, enemy, or purchasing it from a merchant. Once you have a torch in your inventory, the game will automatically assign it to your dedicated light source slot.

It’s important to note that torches, like weapons, belong to individual party members and cannot be shared. So, you’ll need to equip each party member with a dedicated torch. The only way to remove the torch from the light source slot is by either dropping it or replacing it with other light source items like a lantern.

Using Torch On Keyboard & Mouse

On PC, Baldur’s Gate 3 is designed in a way that it can be played entirely using a mouse alone. So, you can equip a torch by clicking the small ‘Toggle Light Source‘ icon, located just beside your character portrait, as referenced in the image above. Given how small this icon is, it shouldn’t surprise you if you overlooked it.

Alternatively, you can also click the ‘Inventory and Equipment‘ icon next to your character’s portrait to pull up the inventory menu and right-click on the torch icon, followed by equip. You can also replace the torch with an alternate light source like a lantern.

You can also customize the Radial Menu and assign the torch to an empty slot. This can be done by pulling up the radial menu by tapping either LB or RB, and then navigating to an empty slot. Next, press X/Square while having an empty slot selected and choose ‘Set Slot.‘ You can now browse through a list of equipment and spells that can be assigned to this empty slot. Look for the torch and press A/X to set it to the empty slot. You can now equip the torch from the radial menu.
